Plan more than one payment method
Carry a practical mix of payment options and keep backup funds separate. Check overseas card use, withdrawal charges and limits with your bank before travelling.
Compare the final payable amount
Ask a provider to state the currency, taxes, fees and payment schedule in writing. When offered a currency conversion at a terminal or ATM, compare the rate and fees rather than accepting it automatically.
Keep records
Retain receipts for exchanges, deposits and supplier payments. Check the payee details against the named business and use a payment method whose protections you understand.
Budget for smaller purchases
Allow for local meals, short transfers and incidental spending alongside prepaid arrangements. Check current official customs and banking guidance before carrying unusually large amounts of currency.
