Choose a region as well as a month

Sri Lanka’s weather differs between coasts and the hill country. Use seasonal patterns to choose a starting route, then check forecasts and local conditions near your dates. Beach weather, sea conditions and walking conditions are separate considerations.

South and west coast

The drier part of the year is commonly associated with roughly December to March. This is a useful starting point for researching Galle, Mirissa and the west coast, rather than a guarantee of clear days or safe swimming.

East coast

Roughly May to September is often a useful starting window for east-coast planning. Compare Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay according to the activities you want and current local conditions.

Hill country and cultural visits

Keep layers and rain protection available in the hills. For outdoor heritage sites, consider heat, steps and shade as well as rainfall. Leave flexible time around longer walks and weather-dependent activities.

Ask before committing

Confirm seasonal operations, park access, boat departures and cancellation arrangements with the relevant provider. Use Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology for current weather information.
